Painting Jamaica

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Collectors and beyond!
It is with great excitement that I announce the launch of my Hatchfund fundraising campaign in support of my residency in Jamaica project. Painting Jamaica is a 3-6 month residency where I will be immersed in the islands rich culture in order to understand it’s past; and how the society and landscape has evolved over the past few hundred years. During my time on the island I will go on mural/agricultural expeditions throughout the island as well as make art inspired by the narratives of locals in my outdoor studio.
I am raising an ambitious $15000 in 45 short days. The campaign closes May 3rd, so any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Many of you know I have been painting in NYC for years now and moved a little ways upstate to regain a broader perspective on life as well as my work. For sometime it has been a dream to go back to the land my ancestors came from and see what has become of the farmlands and forests and witness the evolution of the landscape and society. I was able to visit last year for 10 days but was only able to see a glimpse of a small sector of the island; as travel within Jamaica is difficult due to very rough and often winding roads. In Painting Jamaica I will get to make the most of these expeditions to geographic and other significant points by stopping along the way to share my gift of painting and listening to stories the elders and children have to tell of their home. Please take a moment to view the brief video I put together about my project which includes some footage from my first visit. You can view it athttp://www.hatchfund.org/project/painting_jamaica
I know how inundated we all are with requests for money, and that you may or may not be able to provide substantial resources at this moment in time. Just know that any amount makes a difference and, if you are not able to give, helping to spread the word can be equally powerful. I’ve chosen to work with hatchfund.org because I wanted to partner with a non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to supporting the work of artists. This service is free for the artist, provides fully tax-deductible contributions, and one-on-one support to me throughout the fundraising campaign. It is FOR art. I hope knowing that the small percentage fee that you pay for administration of the campaign is going towards a non-profit committed to cultural advocacy (and not a large corporation with a fancy website platform) will make you feel good about your donation! I’ve also provided some heartfelt perks for your donations to let you know that your support makes you PART of the making of my work! Please make a tax-deductible donation today! Thank you for your consideration, and continued support
Warmly,
